Smart meter warning

Post by blythburgh » Mon Nov 20 2017 9:22am

Our Scottish Power fixed price deal ends on 30th Nov.

Phone up, going up a fair bit, will have to discuss with husband but we would like a smart meter.

"As you might leave I will not put forward the smart meter request because it will not work with the new company".

So to cut a long story short we are switching to British Gas but we are not asking for a smart meter. Did a MoneySavingExpert check for cheapest and then went to comparison site. MSE top deals were a cheaper than comparison site

The Government want us to change power supplier to save money and so force the companies to keep prices down.

The Government want us to use smart meters.

But a smart meter will only work if you stay with the original company.

Not strictly true, smart meters are evolving and if you have one it may or may not be compatible. The new ones due to come online shortly will eventually be compatible with all suppliers. But as with all technology it takes awhile to get it all right.

Personally I think they are unnecessary, although they will have some advantages. eg selective pricing etc at peak hours. I am happy to monitor my usage by reading the meter until it all sorts itself out.

It depends on which smart meter you have , if it's the version 2 they are meant to work with most suppliers

Well Scottish Power ones only work for them or the nice lady at the call centre has not been properly trained.

And we will not be getting one until we are sure it works across the board but continue to go out to read the gas meter which is difficult due to position. Narrow strip between us and front wall part of which is garden and a now very large rose bush (more of a tree) that has been there since the early '70's is is front of the meter box.

I have read that with the Smart Meter roll out, they will be used to charge you more when you need the power the most with the "new world of flexible charges".

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... future.pdf
Tariff Data
Smart meters support tariffs which can
have different prices for different times
of the day7
as well as different amounts
of consumption (e.g. the first 10kWh in
a given period is charged at a different
price to subsequent consumption).

My goal is to be the last person in the country with a smart meter - how thick do they think we are.

It's a similar idea to Economy 7 really, pay more during peak periods and less at other times; also more flexible - not limited to just 2 rates and legacy switch-over times. On a smart tariff you might pay more or you might pay less, depending on your pattern of usage.

Here's the Bulb smart tariff -- outside of peak 4pm to 7pm it's cheaper than their single rate tariff:
