Going, going, gone! The End for Maplin on the High Street.

Thank you to an always helpful, technically aware store staff and good luck in finding new jobs as I unfortunately think that retail staff will find locating new jobs at the present time a little difficult... What high street regular is next???

Sounds good to me.
The more shops close, less reason to waste time on the high street.
Love how some seem to criticise online businesses such as Amazon.

Amazon customer service and prices are far superior to many High Street Stores. I use them far more often than I do the High Street. I do not see that changing anytime soon.

What I hate about Amazon et al is the way they avoid paying corporation tax and virtually avoid the crippling business rates of the high street.

interesting re. the installations. and yes re Pharmacy. they have been checking out UK Pharmacy very thoroughly. one of my neighbours is a pharmacist and set up an online pharmacy, which he subsequently sold out - they sought him out last year and tried to get him on board. the take home message for me was how clear and clinical they were: hold Amazon. they've wobbled along with the rest this week, and finished just back above $1700 at yesterday's close. fwiw if i wasn't holding a disproportionate chunk i'd be tempted to buy some .

Yes, they avoid, but perfectly legally. Business rates are one of the costs of being on the High Street. Things change, the High Street is sadly no longer viable for many busineses. Successful businesses look at costs, how to minimize costs and therefore able to pass savings onto consumers. Sorry, but I'm going to shop where's most convenient and offers the best price and service. Amazon usually meets the criteria for all of this.

We still need the High Street to give the "cash" payers and shoplifters a place to go. Sadly, I'm not interested in subsidising that. I appreciate many are. That's the choice we have.

I doubt anyone here would deny the future is online.

Look East featured the town of Bungay again tonight. Used to have 5 banks now it has none and the only ATM is in a shop so can only be used when it is open.

I wonder how long that ATM will be free to use or will that become another one that charges you to take out cash.

As one shopkeeper pointed out people need cash for the smaller purchases or even larger ones if they are one of the surprisingly high number of people without a bank account. Not to mention the parents who need cash for school dinners and pocket money.

It might suit the banks for us to trade online and use our cards rather than cash but it does not suit everyone and not everything can be paid by a card or phone.
