It boils down to competition - where I live there are half a dozen within a three-mile radius which helps to keep prices competitive.

Not necessarily, even with a relatively high density of garages in an area it is the "area price" which dictates the final average prices. So areas with few garages in a lower average price area can be lower than the opposite as happens between say, Devon and Kent
