UKIP is alive around here

Postby blythburgh » Sat Jul 07, 2018 10:12 am

One of our District Councillors was the leader of the local Labour Party and was their candidate in the last General Election and from the letters to the local press was expecting to be the candidate at the next one. A woman I had little respect for and that had nothing to do with her loud support of Corbyn.

But she suddenly announced she was quitting and the new head of the Labour group on the District Council is a middle of the road Labour, and thoroughly decent, man.

So we have a bye election here. Labour were first with a leaflet that was folded in three so we could, if we chose, refold and put "vote labour" in the window.

Today we got an envelope addressed to us by name, inside was a letter from the Tory candidate and 2 leaflets including one on the Tory plans for the NHS.

In between we got an A5 leaflet from UKIP. So despite having a very effective County Councillor who was deselected at the last County Council election and the resignation of the man who was their candidate at the last General Election (2 weeks after he said how much he wanted to work hard for the party) they are alive and have people prepared to pound the streets.

Whether or not UKIP is still alive in the next door Westminster seat of Great Yarmouth is another matter. The Tory Councillors who resigned and became UKIP went back to the Tories. One Kipper was elected to the local council and then this happened:

And the Kipper is now an Independent Councillor and maybe policians will remember not to argue over personal stuff in front of a Beeb reporter in future
Keep smiling because the light at the end of someone's tunnel may be you, Ron Cheneler

Different... but in brief a restructure and clear out of certain personnel is occurring as UKIP as it still represent a sizable amount of voters opinions but needs to clean up its own act to be viable again...

My thoughts exactly not that I would ever be voting for a bunch of right wing extremists. But in a democracy all sides of opinion need to be able to vote for someone who represents their views.

That's a back handed compliment for them... I don't think looking after your own first and making the NHS the National Health Service rather than the International Health Service is necessarily extremist right wing policy...! Read there manifesto, nothing about invading Poland and Jewish extermination in there so I think you are being a little bit extremist in your description...!

I don't believe that the National Socialist German Workers' Party ever issued a manifesto that contained pledges to invade Poland and exterminate Jews, homosexuals, the disabled, etc and so forth. Of course, careful scrutiny of Nazi propaganda might have led one to the conclusion that such things were a distinct possibility. (They tried to do all that extermination on the QT,)

I regard Kippers as rather cranky nationalists with a misplaced view of the EU and immigration. They may be wrong, but they're not dangerous. Not like that Corbynist party. :)

I disagree with both posters above on UKIP and Corbyn, consider UKIP to be a busted flush and would like to see a Corbyn Govt.

In comparison to most countries I have been to the UK is in a reasonable (but not perfect) state of affairs...

Yes, certainly better off than Belarus, Kazakhstan, Chechnya, Syria or Iraq at present and miles better than Yemen. But give it time, the population is divided, ageing and dependent on migrants to keep it going. Brexit has divided generations and destroyed any consensus in the voting public, there is no faith in politics, the economy has slowed down and it is bottom of the G7 and 17th out of 20 in the G20. But hey, brighten up - England is still in the World cup!!
Just because I'm paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get me
