The Church of Holy Sepulchre is consecrated in Jerusalem. According to traditions dating back to the fourth century, it contains the two holiest sites in Christianity: the site where Jesus was crucified, and Jesus’s empty tomb, where he is believed by Christians to have been buried and resurrected.

1798 - 3000 French revolutionary troops depart from Brest to support the United Irishmen rebellion.

1913 - In Newry, Edward Carson says he will lead a separatist coup, backed by Ulster Volunteers, if goverment plans for Home Rule in Ireland are implemented.

1913 - In Dublin, labour unrest grows with a march 5,000 through the city and riots in Finglas and swords met by armed police.

1920 - Birth of Chaim Herzog, former president of Israel, born in Belfast and educated in Dublin.

1930 - The Irsih Free State is elected to the council of the League of Nations.

1976 - Mairead Corrigan and Betty Williams, founders of the Peace Movement, are awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Camp David Accords concluded
The Camp David Accords, negotiated by U.S. President Jimmy Carter, were completed on this day in 1978, leading to a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel and a broader framework for pursuing peace in the Middle East.

18 September 1914 The long awaited Irish Home Rule Bill, having ben agrred in Parliament is placed on the statute book...... but immediately suspended "due to the current war with Germany".

By 1918, Unionist threats caused implementation to be further "deferred" and led, eventually and after an election in which Sinn Féin won the vast majority of seats in Ireland, to the Anglo-Irish war.
