those were the days when women could afford to pay rent/mortgage and put food on the table with just the man's wage coming in

Those were the days when women were not allowed to work and have a life of their own and their husbands made them stay at home and be housewives only. Where one wage (in some cases) was made to last and people struggled because they did not have enough money coming in to be able to look after their families. Has anything changed very much? Well yes I think it has. We live in a very much more enlightened world. Although I do think that many people still have it just as hard. Although now we have a different kind of poverty.
