I think 'mining' is more of an analogy. They're doing work (calculations that maintain the blockchain) and newly minted coins are given as a reward.

I was listening to a news report from Wakefield yesterday and was totally disheartened by what the people being interviewed were saying. There seemed to be no real opposition to Johnson.
