Friends [One Night Special]

Post by BeautifulSunshine » Sat Feb 22 2020 4:17pm

The cast of Friends is to reunite for a one-off special, more than 15 years since the show ended.

The unscripted episode will air on the HBO Max streaming service, launching in May. A date is yet to be announced.

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer will all appear.

I am not disappointed that I will probably not be able to see it as I have yet to see any episode. But good news for the many fans of the series, well hopefully good news

I suspect "unscripted" is probably a bit of an exaggeration if it's going to be a credible real episode, not just a chatty retrospective. The cast of Friends aren't known as talented improvisational comedy performers (only Lisa Kudrow having attempted it professionally in her Web Therapy show); even the excellent Curb Your Enthusiasm has a script outline written before they largely improvise the dialog.

yeah but they're getting paid millions for doing this - "sad" doesn't really come into it ;)

I wondered whether it means the script hasn't been written yet. I hope so, as I share your concerns about an off-the-cuff episode of Friends. The original worked because it was tightly scripted, not because it was a free-wheeling who-knows-where-this-will-take-us vehicle.
