On Woman's Hour they were talking about the kidnap and murder of a pretty, young white woman. And they are not alone, coverage is everywhere. They compared this to the murder in a park of two pretty young black sisters. In both cases a police officer took inappropriate photos.
But the earlier murder got far less media coverage and there was not mountains of flowers or royalty arriving to add to the mound. No talk of the danger to women out of the home.
Then think back to a pretty middle class white young child kidnapped from her hotel room and the media frenzy that set in motion. Within days a not so photogenic working class young girl was kidnapped. In the end the police discovered it was a scam involving the Mother. But at the time all the media and the public knew was that an innocent child had been kidnapped. But there was far less media attention.
Are the media tapping into the public mood where the victim has to be pretty, middle class and, most importantly, white? Or are the media making a fuss about carefully selected victims and making us feel care more about them than we would normally do?

your premise is off track blyth... in terms of the scale of suffering the thousands of [specifically] white children that have been groomed/abused/drugged/raped/burnt/impregnated by gangs of men in the UK continues to be the national ongoing scandal that remains relatively unreported, and more importantly tackled, for fear of "community issues".

Really, planteria? Your evidence for this is what?
The Rotherham scandal is now well-known. Are you suggesting even after that story broke, the same scale of abuse is being 'overlooked' across the country? And without the mainstream press covering it? They're not usually shy about reporting stories that show foreigners or non-whites in a bad light.

But in that appallilng case the police took the view they were troublesome children who had chosen to be prostitutes. Indefensible but again they were poor children and the do not inflame race relations was only one factor in the police choosing to ignore it.

That is appalling. And the fact it did not happen at scene but chased him for half a mile on foot/in a taxi shows they went far too far in trying to stop him. I hope the manslaughter charges the coroner wants happens. These men killed another man. OK he was on drugs and trouble but that does not give them the right to ignore comments about not being able to breathe.
