The duke of Edinburgh has died at 99.
I’ll say a prayer.

Operation Forth Bridge
Named after a notable feature of the city of his dukedom, the national plan for publicly handling the Duke's death is called Operation Forth Bridge. Initiated upon his death, the plan includes a press release issued by Buckingham Palace simultaneously to the BBC and Press Association; protocol assumes the Lord Chamberlain consulted with the Queen prior to the press release. At the time of the release, all flags will be lowered to half-mast, where they will remain for a period of national mourning. During this period, all television presenters must wear black. No public viewings are expected and no laws will be passed in an eight day mourning period for the Queen.

But one did suprise me in the hours of news about Prince Philip was the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards. I had always assumed his years at Gordonstoun Schooland its Headmaster that inspired them. But only yesterday did I learn that the Headmaster was a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany. The holocaust was unspeakably awful but it did bring some truly remarkable people to these shores. We should be grateful that refugees chose us, and some of them will make a huge difference to our country.

Not complaining that BBC1 and ITV ditched all programmes for the rest of the day. But was it really necessary to fill the BB1 and BBC2 schedules with programmes about the Duke?
Not everyone is a Royalist (though I am) and not everyone wants to sit through hours of tributes. Either keep BBC2 as it should have been or push them out and replace with planned BBC1 shows surely would have kept people happier.

Couldn't agree more b. It sad that he died and it's right that the Beeb should have an obituary.
But not all channels all day.

Re. clearing the TV schedules and other actions (eg. presenters must wear black, flags at half mast, no new laws through Parliament etc).
The last time this happened - death of a monarch/consort - was almost 70 years ago. In that time the country has changed and so has the role of the monarchy. Perhaps because we have not had a change of monarch, we've not been reminded of what a big deal the King or Queen is. They're appointed by God remember? Obviously lots of other societal change has taken place (eg. science increasingly replacing religion), but one factor amongst all that is that we simply haven't had to celebrate or mark the coronation of new monarch, nor the passing of one. That has assisted the Royal Family to become increasingly less important to the British culture and people.
But the plans for pomp and circumstance at the passing of a monarch have not changed at such pace. And now seem a little OTT to many people. 70 years ago, this would have been massive. The country would have stopped. Today.... not so much.

Gone too soon. Goodnight sweet prince.
He was
99! Even by todays standards that's old.
Probably the only good thing to come out of this for the queen is it's 1 less telegram for her to write this year
Besides, I'd though you be pleased, Liz, recently widowed, private income, GOSH likes traveling and meeting new people, grown up children all left home and she lives in a V nice council house. Right up your street
