Even though his world record was broken the following month, no-one can ever take away the fact that he was the first to run the sub 4 minute mile.

And on a typical British day as well.

Sadly a man who was most proud of his job as a neurologist ended up with a neurological disease, Parkinson's. He more than anyone knew what he faced and what was available to help him fight this horrible disease.

RIP an athlete who more than deserved his Knighthood

The men in that race were amatuers. John Humphries on the Today programme said his excellent but not great athlete Father was banned from competing because his club paid for his bus fare so he could attend an important race. He was unemployed and simply did not have enough for the bus fare but it was still deemed he had broken the rules.

Today things are so different. We were talking to friends who are members of a cycle road racing club, just a local club not even a county wide one. But to help them win even some of these amateurs are taking drugs. I cannot say how sad we both felt when we heard this. And our friend is not really a competive rider who prefers the joy of competing but remembers the glory days of when she was young and an aspirin was the only drug considered by the cyclists in the club

His funeral is on Friday afternoon at 3:59

If he got to 88, maybe he didn't die, maybe he just went back to 1955.
