That should have ended "...anymore!"

It is nothing new, I have always known that Autumn starts on 1st Sept and the Autumn equinox is later in the month.

Not strange just the way these things work.

My expat friends in Australia celebrate Christmas by hiring a cabin in the ski resorts and cooking a full turkey dinner. In June.
