Fair point. But is that what drives deposit rates? I suspect that most financial institutions don't really need to attract retail deposits at present as QE has resulted in plenty of cheap wholesale money around.

that is correct.
there are plenty of financial institutions who are keen to lend more (to the profile that they want to lend to) and would willingly lose some deposits/depositors.
