Was this a New Labour policy or just the decision of the government of the day? My guess is that it would have happened anyway, whichever party was in power - lower cost for the government, reduced risk of theft along the way and reduced risk of fraud*. (*not certain about this one. Cash is untraceable once handed over. Money in the banking system leaves a trail, making it easier to track and trace fraudsters)

When I wrote "New Labour decided to stop paying benefits in cash" I was not ascribing 'blame', rather fixing a point in time. If I had to guess, I'd say that a hypothetical Monster Raving Loony Party government would have made the same decision. I'm not that sure why it matters though,

Body Shop closing does not affect me as I buy online, cashback, free gift and no long car journey to go the 1.5 into town and then pay to park if you can find a space. One multi story had to be demolished, well it is partially demolished so far.

Summary: There has been a big increase in the number of restaurants closing. This is attributed to chains like Prezzo, Jamies over-expanding and finding there isn't enough trade to go round.

We do most of our shopping offline, a lot of it in independent shops but in the smaller towns around us to avoid the nightmare of getting into town. Or we go for a day out in Norwich and shop there.

The new bridge will hopefully mean getting into town will be a lot quicker and easier. Yes, the bridge that apparently people started asking for in the 1930's is going to be built, probably. We have the design and the public consultation ends in June this year. But Ipswich was going to have 3 new bridges but having spent several millions they have now cut back the number that will be built. So the third crossing is still only probable. And it won't be in use for a few years yet. Will I live long enough to see it?
