Hmmm. Sounds a bit like we have partial truths here.
The retail sector always sheds jobs in January, so I wouldn't read too much into the Sky News report of nearly 10,000 being lost this month. It's also not clear whether that figure includes the Morrisons reductions (announced but not implemented) or jobs lost due to Debenhams store closures (announced some time ago and only now taking effect).
There's also no mention of new retail jobs. Aldi and Lidl are both expanding. H&M, River Island and Sports Direct opened new stores near me last year. Are these new jobs counted or is this just gross losses.

Brighthouse said to be on the verge of collapse.

This is another of those retailers that we will be better off without. Although they provided products on credit for people with low income, the costs were exorbitant: I just checked a Sony TV selling at £519.99 in Currys. At Brighthouse you would pay £1,068 over three years - an effective APR of more than 60%. And that's before you add on insurance (mandatory, but not necessarily from them) and extended warranty.

I fear the virus will unfortunately not only kill off human beings but also a number of small business will die off at the same time. I have passed a number of constantly empty restaurants which may be the first of a wave of business to fail during this period...

Indeed - and maybe our responses to the virus will kill off some larger businesses too
Workplace shutdowns or forced stay-at-home will undoubtedly hit some people's income badly. At the same time, if we're not going to the shops/pub/restaurant/match/cinema, and not going on holiday, what will we do? Online shopping? Netflix? Gardening? I forsee a baby boom early next year.

Met up with cousins in law for lunch in an independent cafe in a nearby town. Very busy yesterday.
Keep smiling because the light at the end of someone's tunnel may be you, Ron Cheneler
