I got a telling off from a carless friend for shopping at and edge of town supermarket not the centre of town one he used.

Why would I shop at that one when a) I have to carry all the shopping back to the car park I had to pay to use? Why would I want far less choice as it is a smaller shop and because it is only a metro the prices are higher?

He said I should be shopping there to support those like him who had no car.

We actually shop in the Tesco in a nearby market town that a lot of people use to park for free whilst they shop in the town. It is very close to the town centre and has 3 hours free parking. Done that ourselves lol And whilst at Tesco weekly we shop in the town but pay to park as we have meal then shop before getting to Tesco.

And we do buy a bit of stuff online as well.

The supposed decline of the high street is not even new. Ten years ago we were noting the disappearance of Woolworths, etc….
I think that was when Boro Boy started this thread.

I remember them talking about the decline of the high street due to supermarkets at least 40 years ago

It is called competition and moving with the times. It is undeniable that we have all benefited from the rise of the supermarket.

Only benefited in some ways but not all. I use a supermarket and independents but the majority of groceries come from the supermarket.

There is no doubt that your weekly shopping bill would be a lot more expensive if you were using the corner shop for them all and if the supermarket did not exist.

Supermarkets have mega buying power. The corner shop could only compete on convenience.

But my corner shop is independent but part of the Premier stores group which means it does have regular offers. OK most of them, like the supermarkets, are on things I do not want. But I do get bargains at both.

Will soon be getting bargains at Aldi. The new retail park is gradually opening all its shops. The Range opens today and Aldi withing a fortnight. Yes, the Aldi that they said would open In March will open in August. Is the delay due to Brexit, the weather, the Russians or The Donald? I have no idea
