This is not news: The on set of old age for the Baby Boomers generation has been known about for a long time and talk of the age increase for National Pensions has been a topic since the late 1980's at least.

So this is not a Tory thing this issue would have to be dealt with by any government which found itself in power and no doubt with the same results...!

As you know I am not a Tory party supporter but I do believe in fairness. This is NOT a Tory party idea. It comes from a think tank set up by Tory MP Ian Duncan Smith.

It is not a Conservative thing but an idea put forward by a right wing think tank set up by a member of the right wing of the Tory Party.

The headline of the thread has taken the Labour Party supporting newspaper slant on this and run with it. No doubt it is a very biased twist on a report by a think tank. Hit the Tory party with a something that almost amounts to a smear. Nothing unusual about that, you only have to read the Mail and Express to see they put a hard right slant on political news.

Thanks for clarifying the headline.

As for the comment attributed to Ros Altman - it's not as daft as it sounds. State pension is provided freely: if you paid the years in, you receive it. ...
Or if you can't work and claim benefits you get a NI credit. Somebody who spent 35 years on benefits would get a full new state pension without paying anything in at all.

And if you don't get the full amount, you can claim means-tested pension credit. Out of work benefits are more demanding -eg work capability assessments, more stringent means testing, etc. For some who are older they may never work again and so the opportunity to move to retirement benefits rather than out of work benefits is a useful simplification.
Not really. You'd get the same tests to see if they qualified for the 'get it early state pension'.

Indeed. A 'hard right slant' in this case appears to mean, an accurate headline, and a more reasoned report. :)

the verdict is correct, of course. this is the new reality, equality from the state. and we all need to try to put some aside for the future through Pensions/ISAs/other investments, alongside.
