On the rare occasions I have used Amazon I can't fault them. Price, speed, delivery charges, customer service, after care - all AAA.

in terms of returns, Amazon has been a great investment for a lot of people..
and however their telephone CS may be, there's no doubt they are a well-positioned business that is getting more right than wrong.

anyone else any thoughts as to how best to position portfolios during these strange times?
i'm looking again at physical precious metals.

You still won't get me to invest in Amazon...

I think you may have missed the boat (unless you are in it for the long term) on the "precious metals" sector. You could try Anglo American (it includes things like De-Beers diamonds) as a long term investment and build up a holding as it spreads over most mining sectors. Or specialise in future possible advantageous sectors like Lithium mining (Batteries - I'm thinking electric cars etc.) again building up an ever larger holding over time - an element of future proofing...!?!

There will always be the one off "oil strike" share but now we are talking gambling... :ugeek:

PS: These are not "strange times", these are times of change, change = opportunity, especially for those who do their homework - take a look at Global Ports Holdings, which I spoke to the CIC about recently on the "Investment for June" thread.

i would contend that these are strange times, that have accelerated the pace of various changes, and therefore represent an opportunity. for example, many people have bought online for the first time as a result of the virus, and many of these are likely to continue to do so. Amazon will benefit, but i'm not trying to 'get you' to invest in anything, and enough other people pushed Amazon to a new all time high of $2600 today. and fwiw i see precious metals and bitcoin benefiting from the central bank response to the virus, over time.

 $3400 now AAAT. Interesting that John Street Capital refers to the big tech companies continuing to grow, and there is talk of changing the indices in the states, with the big Nasdaq companies forming the basis for a new large cap index. JST refers to the beneficiaries of current trends to be 'big tech, bitcoin and gold'. as it happens that's pretty much a description of my portfolio.
