where is the best up-to-date list of UK Building Societies?

The Building Societies Association has all the information you need. Go to this page:

Click on the link near the top which says
List of building societies by asset size
And it downloads a list of all 43 building societies listed by both size (Nationwide bigger than the rest combined) and in alphabetical order as well.
