What have you never eaten that is mainstream?

Post by blythburgh » Sat Jul 13 2019 10:55am

Listening to "The Kitchen Cabinet" makes me realise there are things I have never eaten but most people seem to have.

One thing that is popular and i have never been in the slightest interest in eating is "a crisp sandwich". A sandwich and a crisp are things to be eaten but IMHO the crisp if eaten with a sandwich should not be inside but eaten in separate mouthfuls. But each to their own so I will not tut tut if you eat a crisp sandwich in my presence.

Same as chips served with bread and butter. For me they do not enter the mouth at the same time but I have been in the presence of others who sandwich the bread with the chips. It did not disgust me but nor did it make me want to try it

I cannot imagine ever eating Tripe. But to some people it is very special.

Hmm, Not sure if it is mainstream but my sister loves snails. I have never tried them and just the thought makes me feel ill.

I love prawns , but if you saw them alive , they look like insects in water ,would you consider eating them

You can't beat a chip and mushy peas butty ( buttered bread ) , dipped in brown sauce

I think you mean sashimi...... sushi is any dish with vinegared rice, sashimi is raw fish.

When raw fish is used, it has to be really, really fresh (so, something almost unknown in the UK!!)
But there are vegetable makizushi and prawn or salmon nagiri are not raw - or many types of sushi made with cooked seafood. Or you can try tataki, which is raw beef cut sashimi-style and "cooked" in a soy dip (just don't ask for tatami.... that's a sleeping mat!

Still, if you still don't fancy it, more for me!!
I ate sushi yesterday. Yum!

I've never eaten tripe either, but the people in Oporto are known as "tripeiros" or tripe-eaters and there are dozens of recipes (I'm told). Supposedly it all started in 1415 when the fleet destined to conquer Ceuta left port and took all the fresh meat, leaving only the offal for the population to eat. So, there's a choice, sail off to fight the Moors, or eat tripe!!

People from Lisbon (like SWMBO) are called "alfacinhas", or "little lettuces"..... but nobody has ever been able to tell me why!)

For me, I don't eat cheese.... so no stilton to go with my port and very, very careful ordering italian food in the UK!!

Quinoa - superfood. I won't sleep until I've taken my dose of quinoa.

For reasons that wholly escape me, mustard, horseradish and tartare are considered normal things to eat by some people.

They are the three horsemen of the condiment apocalypse and should be feared and avoided as such.
