Age 79, after a long illness.
I met him years ago and thought he was too nice to be a politician.
His mistake was in not seeing that he was being manipulated out of the government to stand against Ken Livingstone as London mayor. The things he defended were then open to change.....
He obviously saw how he had been sidelined and never returned to font-line politics. A great shame.
