Nasty phone scam

Post by macliam » Thu Nov 14 2019 3:28pm

Beware a new scam where a text-to-voice message claims to be from Mike Wilson at HMRC (he really exists...)

The number I was called from claimed to be 07366368969 and the fairly garbled machine-voice suggested that I had a claim outstanding against me and the this was my last chance to contest it - "time sensitive", so call back now. :wtf:

It seems I'm in good company as others have also heard from good old Mike.

But, more worryingly is a claim that, in some cases, the fraudsters spoofed a GENUINE HMRC number!

Does HMRC use mobile numbers to call these days?

It seems its pretty easy to spoof the caller ID numbers these days. So many 'organisations' offering UK telephone services.

Harumph! Wouldn't have happened when BT owned the network, Harumph! :D

However, I find it unlikely that there is noting that can be done about network-based spoofed numbers - because the actual number making interconnect is known.... the spoof is just manipulation of the display fields. So, no match on fields, block call. simples. Of course, all this has been made far more complex by VoIP..... it's the price of "progress". :shifty:

I wouldn't believe anything that came from an unsolicited phone call.

Too true.
I even clicked on a patently dodgy link on an email at work today. Luckily I stopped before entering my login details that it requested.

I got a text from’D2’ today
It was only the fact she addressed me as ‘Kevin ‘ and not ‘Dad’ which gave it away
