Pi$$ up in a brewery.....

A 1.5 mile stretch of road in Suffolk has been closed for 45 weeks - resulting in a 27 mile detour for people needing to use it.

The reason is the collapse of a culvert under the road, meaning that only the actual road surface itself is supporting traffic. The report says that people had been removing plastic bollards and ignoring the closure (unsurprisingly) to avoid the detour - so the road has now been blocked with concrete.

Two things occur here - no attempt seems to have been made to temporarily bridge the damage (the army have the necessary kit) and the council say they are "liaising with specialist contractors", suggesting that work to repair the road hasn't even been agreed yet. :eh:

Similarly, a road connecting me to the nearest town was cut since storm Ciara because a house chimney was in danger of collapsing. The diversion was down a narrow road used as free parking for the rail station (so single lane for uncontrolled 2-way traffic most of the way) and then out onto a junction at the mercy of uncontrolled traffic using the main road. Yesterday, due to complaints, temporary lights were installed to allow single-lane trffic past the house..... but there is still no end date for the disruption, since "the property owner could "not be contacted to effect repairs". No kidding....

As was pointed out, presumably no councillors use that road......

Easy to judge from afar, maybe there are extenuating circumstances?

Sorry, incompetence is not an extenuating circumstance

It will be sorted before the next election and all parties will claim it was their efforts that sorted it

I can only comment on the mess they have made of our main road from south to north. For years they would not support the need for a 3rd crossing as they could do remedial work that would ease the traffic jams over the current two bridges. One thing they did was to widen the road just north of the bascule bridge over the A12 (now renamed A47 and the cost of hundreds of thousands of pounds) and install traffic lights. No idea how much that cost but as the traffic lights often have no vehicles joining or leaving the A47 a bit pointless waste of money that has added to the jams.

They did eventually agree we needed a 3rd bridge and it was made part of the Tory commitment when David Cameron was seeking re-election. An agreement made not made long before the Govt. gave its support but the town has been asking for a 3rd crossing since before WW2.

Don't jump too soon - you could end up with a mess like the Orwell Bridge, that has to be closed every time there are high winds......

I see there is a plan to convert all out local streetlights to LED, which seems great..... but it wouldn't surprise me that they use solar powered ones that don't work at night!!
