A 1.5 mile stretch of road in Suffolk has been closed for 45 weeks - resulting in a 27 mile detour for people needing to use it.
The reason is the collapse of a culvert under the road, meaning that only the actual road surface itself is supporting traffic. The report says that people had been removing plastic bollards and ignoring the closure (unsurprisingly) to avoid the detour - so the road has now been blocked with concrete.
Two things occur here - no attempt seems to have been made to temporarily bridge the damage (the army have the necessary kit) and the council say they are "liaising with specialist contractors", suggesting that work to repair the road hasn't even been agreed yet.
Similarly, a road connecting me to the nearest town was cut since storm Ciara because a house chimney was in danger of collapsing. The diversion was down a narrow road used as free parking for the rail station (so single lane for uncontrolled 2-way traffic most of the way) and then out onto a junction at the mercy of uncontrolled traffic using the main road. Yesterday, due to complaints, temporary lights were installed to allow single-lane trffic past the house..... but there is still no end date for the disruption, since "the property owner could "not be contacted to effect repairs". No kidding....
As was pointed out, presumably no councillors use that road......
