rhyme to teach children how to use a zebra crossing... :wtf:
You mean a pelican crossing.
There are no lights at a zebra crossing (just Belisha beacons).

Also, nothing rhymes with zebra.

True but everyone still seems to call them a Zebra crossing.

How dare some people not be men! :o

Perhaps back in Boro Boy's day staying on the other side of the road would've been appropriate punishment for the political act of being someone different? Nostalgia is overrated, the past sucked for many underprivileged groups; it's good to move forwards!

I can remember last century in a LibDem exec committee someone dared to say we should say Chair instead of Chairman. It did not happen because a dinosaur said a Chair was something you sat on so should not be used. My remark that many words had more than one meaning was ignored by the dinosaur and he made such a fuss the move was dropped.

The dinosaur is still active but has lost as we now have a Chair. But I cannot see what is wrong with the little green man and it is surely easier to train children to walk when they see the little green man not some symbol some may not understand and is certainly hard to tell to children.

And what is wrong with calling a Belisha beacon by its long used name? I am sick at the way our language is being dumbed down. Say it like it is spelt has become the norm and forget some letters are silent. How long before we start spelling like the Americans?

There's nothing wrong with the green man. It symbolises 'pedestrians'.
There's nothing wrong with a green woman, or couple, symbolising 'pedestrians' too.

There are variations everywhere you go. Off the top of my head, in the eastern half of Berlin there is a different green man with a hat (different to to the western side of Berlin). In Havana the green man is animated and walks. In New York, they just use the word 'WALK'. At some crossings, there's just a round green light, with no markings.

Incredibly, people - even children - seem to understand what these lights indicate, and there aren't huge crowds stood at the roadside waiting for a gender-specific light.
