Amazing how the BBC and others keep pulling the oldies out of the woodwork, So many of the people interviewed would be so better off if they just kept muttering away in the House of Lords or at their homes in the dark. Just heard an interview with the bigoted Anne Widecombe once my MP when she was in Maidstone, Also once mooted as a future Prime Minister in the dark days of Thatcher and just after.

I met her when she was visiting a friend of mine who was confined to a wheelchair with Cerebral Palsy. As his MP I thought she had a genuine concern for him and how he coped with his life. But it was interesting to see that about a year after this she authored a book. The Clematis Tree (2000) A story about a family with a disabled child. (Not a plug). I might be doing her a disservice, but I do not think so.

Your post brings David Davis to mind. He was a minister in John Major's government, then party chairman two decades ago, so already seemed like a has-been when Theresa May exhumed him for her cabinet in 2016. Yet here we are another 6 years later with both pundits and politicians suggesting him as a candidate for the next Prime Minister. To be fair, his experience probably counts for something and there are undoubtedly worse replacements for Johnson, but I find Davis rather dull and ineffectual. I don't recall him having any sparkling or even notable achievements.

Eleven people have now thrown their hats into the ring. I do not understand the mentality of anyone who wants to put themselves through the ordeal. It can only be power seeking, I see no other reason. Prime Minister is the least thanked job there is. None of them will be able to do the right thing. Dammed if they do and dammed if they don't.

But of course, it is not just about becoming PM it is also about trying to ensure you are offered a ministerial position in any new government.

I agree with you. Some of them are serious contenders. Javid, Sunak spring to mind. Most are doing it to raise their own profile. Also, by getting some support together, and then lending their support to another candidate, they can try to "buy" a seat at the Cabinet (if their chosen candidate wins of course).
