Here we go... get your popcorn ready...
Senior Conservative backbencher tells me tonight they are confident of getting to 54 letters tomorrow to try and oust the PM.
“Up the revolution!” they tell me.
No 10 / whips subjecting them to “threats and blackmail” but has only angered MPs further, they say.

One senior Tory has messaged me to say they are hearing there might be a statement from Sir Graham Brady first thing tomorrow morning and that the PM has been told tonight.
Not confirmed - but there’s a sense of real movement tonight.

A substantial portion of the Tory majority, especially those from the 'red wall' were elected because they were in the Brexit-supporting Tory party. Now that same party is becoming unpopular again, they fear they will likewise lose their seats. It is absolutely in their interest to have a popular leader.
Of course, the elephant in the room is who would replace Boris?
Govey? Raab? Patel? Truss? JRM (god help us)?
Or will someone less Brexity come back from the wilderness? May? Hunt?
Perhaps they'll find a compromise candidate, someone bland enough not to cause offence, but to carry them through until someone better can be found. Another John Major or Jim Hacker?

The early frontrunners appear to be Truss and Sunak; although tory leadership contests do have an erratic history quite capable of ending with surprise winners. We might not see much change in policy direction if any of the current cabinet members become leader. I'd prefer to see as many of them as possible cleared out. Jeremy Hunt might be more of a unity candidate; while the ERG/CRG will obviously want another puppet.
The rebels may have been a bit overoptimistic about the number of letters sent to Graham Brady last night, but either way PMQs this lunchtime should be interesting.

Rumours are that Govey was seen buying an oilstone yesterday.........
Just because I'm paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get me

Apparently it would better to avoid a vote on Friday because there's only a single line whip and many MPs won't be there. They would have to vote by proxy, which would mean they weren't entirely anonymous, and perhaps some don't want to blow their cover just yet. Some may also be awaiting Sue Gray's forthcoming bestseller before deciding which side their bread is buttered.

Being David Davis, he will, no doubt, want to keep any advantages of having Boris as PM, whilst at the same time not being tied to any costs............ he might also want a Boris who allows him to have an alternative PM, whilst at the same time not being tied to Boris at all.

There should be a by election ASAP
I am inclined to agree but what should be and what will be are often never the same. Boris Johnson should resign, but he won't.
