29 July 1848 - The "Young Ireland" rebellion culminates in the "Battle of the Widow MacCormack's cabbage garden" near Ballingarry, Co. Tipperary. The leaders were arrested, convicted of high treason and sentenced to death, but their sentences were commuted to transportation - despite the oratory of one who said he had rebelled "not because I loved England less, but because I loved Ireland more"

Another, Thomas Francis Meagher, had travelled to revolutionary France prior to the rebellion and returned with a new flag, based on the French one - so this was the first time the Green, White and Orange tricolour was ever used. Meagher escaped to America and later joined the U.S. Army, leading the "Irish Brigade" with the rank of Brigadier General on the Union side. After the Civil War, he became the acting territorial governor of Montana.

Not bad for a condemned rebel......

2001 - Met Eireann reports that up to 22 millimetres of rain has fallen in the south. Those were the days....

Also 1823, Thomas Francis Meagher (see above) was born in Waterford.

Also 1916, Sir Roger Casement, humanitarian activist and Irish nationalist, was hanged in Pentonville Prison. He was the last to be executed as a result of the Easter Rebellion in Dublin.
