W-8BEN

Post by planteria » Sun Nov 27, 2016 7:13 pm

is anyone else filling one of these in as standard?

i used to use Hargreaves Lansdown as my broker, and they have written to remind me that my W-8BEN will expire at the end of the year.. but i'm no longer with them. iii haven't contacted me re. this. don't want to fall foul of the regs.. but iii are less reliable in some respects

Talk about living on the edge.

I trade US shares. The US is the best market to trade IMHO.

The W-8BEN is for non US citizens who have a reportable income in the US, the W-9 is for US citizens working abroad, you don't necessarily have to complete it's just you will automatically be paying an extremely high proportion of tax on any income. If you hold US stock it could be worth doing if you are ever going to sell or even receive dividends (which will have tax auto deducted at higher rate), its a fairly simple form (your broker or the registrar of the shares you hold will help you out on it).

I filled one out awhile ago; wasn't entirely straightforward as all the terminology is US-centric.
