Is there a phrase applicable to Halloween?
No but it is a waste of money and a terrible use of natural resources. Clothes etc for one night which will be go to landfill afterwards. And that is only the stuff that is sold, Tesco had very large amounts of stuff reduced by 25% on Monday. I guess most of that will go straight to landfill as well.
Keep smiling because the light at the end of someone's tunnel may be you, Ron Cheneler

Nonsense. Those reported Russian objections relate to dilution of particular traditions and not the waste of resources that blythburgh was criticising.

Bah Humbug will do just fine.

Halloween is just another occasion for retailers to promote stuff we don't need and for some people to dress up. It leaves me completely cold.

[head above parapet mode]

I like Hallow'een. I don't feel any need to go to town over it, but every year we dig out the 'melting skull' candle and the little plastic spiders and other bits and bobs that we have acquired over the years. It's been a few years since I carved a pumpkin, but we do always make a point of cooking a pumpkin curry.*
I also like the fancy dress parties and the tradition of children going trick or treating - provided their tricks are harmless fun. Unfortunately this is an aspect that has been abused and I fully understand why some people dislike it. Round our way, the parents are usually at the end of the drive and the kids only approach houses with an outward decoration.

Yes, it's an American tradition that we've imported, although I think we used to note (if not celebrate) Hallow'een before. But I think it can be a fun tradition and I like this extra little 'festival' at the very end of autumn.

[parapet mode/]

*Clean out the crud from inside the pumpkin, then roast it for 30 mins. Cook the curry as normal for 15 mins, then pour it all into the pumpkin and back in the oven for another 30 mins. Serve direct from the pumpkin at the table. Carve out the pumpkin flesh from the insides as you serve it. Looks fantastic when you present a whole pumpkin on the table.

I can remember the time, my Dad worked very hard to put a roof over my head.

It was the worst Halloween costume ever.
