POLL SELL: United Utilities [UU.]

Post by AAAlphaThunder » Fri Jan 18, 2019 4:51 pm

Dear Members and Fellow Investors

Following hot on the heels of our successful vote to sell one of our holdings in Greene King. A similar discussion has been ongoing regarding United Utilities, as highlighted by Beachboy:
Hot on the heels of our successful reduction of our GKN holding (with the sale yesterday on of our our two previous purchases) I wanted to open the debate as to whether we should look at something similar with United Utilities. Like GNK we doubled up in terms of purchases and both were initially up approximately 15+% for a short period but have languished in the negative for some time now. At some points both tranches have been down over 20%. At present our first block is down by only 4% which is the smallest it has been for a very long time.

Unless we have a very clear feeling that these shares are going to rocket then if we can reduce our holding (or exit altogether perhaps?) for a break even amount I would potentially be interested. The reasoning being that we have held these for ages, as far as I can see they were not designated as particularly a long-term income generating share and are not currently proving to be that even they were. Also and possibly most importantly I thinks some new purchases might stimulate a bit more interest and enthusiasm amongst members. Whilst I still actively follow developments, chip into discussions and am very keen to see the club succeed there is nothing like some actual buying and selling to feel a bit a more engaged. I am not proposing at all that we just start buying and selling for the sake of it but having had to pay out for members leaving from our funds it has curtailed our ability to do much pro-actively on this front recently.

Also I think some refinement of our portfolio might help us move towards the strategy that very well presented by Gardinan, which we all agreed, with a mixture of income generators and riskier shares.

In a nutshell the required number of members have expressed an interest in selling one holding of our United Utilities shares.

I propose we put our money - hard earned - hard GBP - hard cash - to good use as soon as possible.

As always comments, feedback and constructive criticism are most welcome (from non-members also). Please take part in productive discussion and have your say and cast your vote.

Note:
Please vote as soon as you can.
The poll will last seven days (unless a consensus is reached before).
You can change your vote.
There is not an option for none of the above.
Happy investing

Kind Regards

Back to the poll ................this concluded on Friday.

Seven members votes for 'Yes, sell now, if we are at a break even price including dividends' and one for
'Yes, sell now anyway, even if loss crystallised'. So added together eight members in total support selling the first tranche of UU as long as we breakeven. As that is more that 50% of the club's membership I assume that this is now agreed?

Garindan, are you happy for me to implement the result of this poll or do we need to conclude the discussion about process first?

Yes, fine. So it is 66 shares to go out of the 126 total held.

You must accept my apologies for this error. I was sidetracked still thinking about how I was going to vote, as I thought it was going to make the difference! I was also toying over the idea for a suggested way forward. The combined effect was I didn't consider the sell anyway option, as that was not one I was considering and I overlooked the fact we had a result whether or not I voted...

https://www.unitedutilities.com/corpora ... are-price/

18th Jan price was over £8.30 , yesterday £7.98 , currently £8.15: so timing is everything , you have to sell above £8.05 to break even https://www.imutual.co.uk/report?id=909
Originally bought 60 at £9.56 on 26 Feb 2015
Then bought a further 66 at £8.96 on 16 Nov 2016
If quizzes are quizzical then what are tests?

This is true, however, it is also true that on the day it peaked at 833p it was also as low as 807p the very same day, so in truth even the time of day is important.

Riding high today at £8.25ish, putting us in profit on both holdings. If we're selling it, let's get it done.

So just to confirm that today I sold 66 shares from our 126 share holding in United Utilities. This represents the amount of shares we bought in the second investment we made in the company. This should mean the following:

Bought 66 @£8.96 - purchase commission - stamp = £591.45

Sold 66 @826.48 - £5.25 sale commission = £540.23
Dividends received to date = £59.83
Dividends due to be received = £9.08
Total received = £609.14

+/- = +£17.69 or approximately +3%
