Admiral ads have fixed the name in my mind. Bought via Aviva at imutual this month

they made the famous 'blue shorts' Saddlers kit of the 82-83 season.
it all went down hill from there.

They were in such a prominent market position supplying top division teams and the national team, it seems an incredible decline in fortunes...!

Admiral are a classic example of a "brand" rather than a manufacturer. The brand was started by a manufacturer in Leicester and had some success, but lost connection with the actual manufacture of products and became a "badge engineering" brand. As such, it was outmanoeuvred by the big boys in Nike and Adidas, etc. - and, when all you have to sell is your name, the rest is history.
