Do you remember ?

Post by expressman33 » Sun Sep 08 2019 5:46pm

I saw this on a local facebook page and thought it summed up my youth:-

Close your eyes and go back in time...
Before the Internet or the iPhone.
Before terrorists, joyriders and crack....
Before Facebook or Instagram...
Way back........

I'm talking about Hide and Seek in the park.
The corner shop.
Hopscotch.
Butterscotch.
Skipping.
Handstands.
Leapfrog.
Football with an old can.
Fingerbob.
Beano, Dandy, Buster, Twinkle and Dennis the Menace.
Roly Poly.
Hula Hoops, jumping the stream, building dams.
The smell of the sun and fresh cut grass.
Bazooka Joe Bubble Gum.
An ice cream cone on a warm summer night from the van that plays a tune
-
Chocolate or vanilla or strawberry or maybe Neapolitan or perhaps a screwball

Wait......

Watching Saturday morning cartoons....
short commercials, The Double Deckers, Road Runner, He-Man, Zeebedee, Tiswas or Swapshop?, and 'Why Don't You'? - or staying up for Doctor Who.
When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere.

Earwigs, wasps, stinging nettles and bee stings.
Sticky fingers.
Cops and Robbers, Cowboys and Indians, and Zorro.
Climbing trees.
Building igloos out of snow banks.
Walking to school, no matter what the weather.
Running till you were out of breath, laughing so hard that your stomach hurt.
Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights.
Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.
Being tired from playing.... remember that?

The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.
Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.
Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle.
Choppers and Grifters.

I'm not finished just yet.....

Eating raw jelly. Orange squash ice pops.

Remember when...

There were two types of trainers - girls and boys, and Dunlop Green.
Flash and the only time you wore them at school was for P.E.
You knew everyone in your street - and so did your parents.
It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends.
You didn't sleep a wink on Christmas eve.
When nobody owned a pure-bred dog.
When 25p was decent pocket money.
When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny.
When nearly everyone's mum was at home when the kids got there.
It was magic when dad would "remove" his thumb.

When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents.

When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carry groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it.

When being sent to the head's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs etc.

Parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! - and some of us are still afraid of them!!

Didn't that feel good?

Just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that!

Remember when....

Decisions were made by going " Ip Dip Dog -FILTERED- "
"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest.
Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in "Monopoly".
The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs.
And the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to one.
It was unbelievable that 'British Bulldog 123' wasn't an Olympic event.
Having a weapon in school, meant being caught with a catapult.

Nobody was prettier than Mum.
Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.
Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin.
Ice cream was considered a basic food group.
Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.
Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.

If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED.

Apart from the last line, I like this; it's a rose-tinted and selective view of a childhood that no longer exists, but if those are the bits of your childhood that you remember, then it sounds like an enjoyable one. Who wants to remember the bad stuff, best to leave it behind if you can.

But that last line, suggesting that just because this was your childhood means you've lived life to the full... nah. By definition, if you remember a lot of this, then you were a child in the 60s or 70s, so would have therefore lived longer than someone born in say the 1990s.

I don't think it necessarily means you've lived a life full of experiences and that you've broadened your horizons, experienced thrills, or influenced the lives of others. To tick off most of this list you barely needed to leave your own street, let alone have an adventure or travel in foreign cultures.

Some of those things are still around, others may be gone but kids these days enjoy their own new things anyway. Did you notice The Beano just passed its 4000th issue? I can remember it celebrating the 2000th issue...!

I do recall that old dog poo in the streets was white and when you drove a long way in the car the front of the car was always covered in dead flies; both of which don't happen any more, one for obvious reasons and the other I'm not sure...

I don't have any flies on my windscreen at the end of a long journey. But then its not surprising as I have used the screen wash to clean them off during the journey.

Can't speak for dog poo, never had a dog and am not that interested to study any that is in the street that carefully.

We should all be worried about the lack of insects on our cars these days. Insects feed the birds not just make a mess of our cars.

Once we used DDT and nobody worried. Then it was discovered the dramatic loss in birds of prey was due to the DDT. Killed the insects but it went up the food change to the birds or prey who ended up with the poison in their bodies was causing thin egg shells which were being broken.

If we had ignored that and said it is only birds of prey so nothing to worry about I dread to think what the poison in DDT would have done to human bodies.

Even if you do not care whether or not there are birds around you should worry about the decline and what it means for us humans in the longer run.

But does fewer squashed insects on the front of our cars mean that there are fewer insects?

Could it be that the improved aerodynamics of modern cars mean that most insects are swept away by the airflow rather than squashed?

I expect fewer insects sticking to the car body is probably more likely due to improvements in design factors such as aerodynamics and the formulation of the paint, than other reasons.

Edit: Ah, pabenny posted similar thoughts at the same time!

It could be due to design but the fact remains there are far, far fewer insects to end up on the car or get swept to one side or other or the vehicle.

If you do not think there are less insescts then just google and see you are mistaken..

Try this one for example: https://www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/en ... it-matters
