White van mystery

Post by pieman » Sun Sep 29 2019 1:48pm

Hi,

I'm interested in what people think about this white van mystery.

There has been a small white van (fairly new - 60 plate) parked opposite our house since July (!) - slightly annoying as parking is at a premium, though obviously not illegal - however the MOT ran out last week and still no sign of movement.

Even more strange it is locked although the handbrake is off??

Two weeks ago, it was joined by another small white van - which again has not moved since.

Everybody in the street is baffled - but until the tax runs out (end of October), as it is parked legally - the police are not interested.

Any thoughts?

First, we have probably the best Police force in the world.

My thought is hardly surprising. With the cuts to the Police (who thought that was a good idea?) the Police just don't have the resources to send a patrol to look for "a suspicious White van mystery".

I do not know where you live but in London it is not just parking spaces that are at a premium but also storage. Builders and alike will buy a van and park it close to an area the are are working in a merely use it as a storeroom. Vastly cheaper than having a static store and no commercial rates either...

This may be the problem which has spread to your area now, a side effect of property price rise and availability...

If you want to report it/them try
DVLA - https://forms.dft.gov.uk/report-an-untaxed-vehicle/
and/or your local authority

Thanks people,

I have heard about people using their vans as storage - but doesn't seem to be the case here.

I will follow up on reporting it for no MOT.

Unfortunately they are both still sitting there.

The first car had its tax run out last week (end of Sept)

The police website was not helpful so I rang 101 on Oct 1st pointing out it was on a public highway but had no tax or Mot

Their response was to tell me to ring the highways dept of the local council as it was an 'abandoned vehicle' as such it was a council matter not a police matter.

So far, due to being unable to call at work, I have been unable to call the council - so i am waiting to see what happens next.
