As much as I despise the tories this isn't on them the merger they did saddled them with so much debt they were never getting from under it plus this minor thing called the internet they simply didn't adapt to it. Also, the 200m wouldn't have bailed them out just merely give them a bit more time before the inevitable.
Failed to keep up with the times.

I am not a Tory Govt. supporter and at times feel the Govt. of the day need to step in and help a company. But in this case it would not have solved the problem and IMHO a waste of money. I feel for those affected and so sad that a great British founded company has gone. But that is down to the management not the workers.
Says it all about the workers that the holiday refs were doing all they could to help people according to the holidaymakers. And these were people who suddenly were out of work. Makes you feel proud to be British when Jo and Joe Public can do this despite the obvious difficulties they faced.

We should reassigned all Thomas Cook passengers as ‘Refugees.’
Then we just ignore them

The Government has stepped-up and avoided wasting our tax money on a failed company; the Government brought all the holiday makers back to the UK. They established a "shadow airline" to bring everyone back to the UK. Not perfect but catastrophe avoided however, I'm sure a few unemployed airline workers don't think that, good luck to them finding new employment!

This Govt. has done what every Govt. does in similar circumstances. It is all the workers I feel sorry for. If the pilots did not have a decent bank account to pay mortgage etc that is their own fault as they got well paid. But many of the workers did not earn enough to build up a decent bank account, have not been paid for Sept. and direct debits are bouncing for some of them. Those are the ones my heart goes out to.

Your son
may have it wrong. According to the news report, they are not in immediate danger of collapsing.

To be clear, Pizza Express is not in imminent danger of going bust. It has until 2021 before it needs to start paying back £600m to its outside creditors. (The other £500m is a loan from its Chinese owners).
