Unfortunately they've screwed up the policy change, by telling customers not to travel or visit bars, restaurants, theatres and events, etc. but not actually enforcing it. Therefore insurance for these industries does not activate and the affected SMEs are doomed. So take your pick - either Johnson is protecting the insurance industry, or they made a hugely incompetent mistake that needs to be rectified ASAP.

France has just announced a €300 billion support package for its businesses, whilst Johnson and Sunak are still napping.

Edit: The ABI reportedly say that most businesses won't be covered either way (even if they were, insurance pockets might not be deep enough) so government bailouts are the only hope for affected industries. In the meantime everyone affected is still left waiting to find out what help will be available.

So the UK government ignored WHO advice to instead follow what it claimed was the best science led approach - that appears to have been nothing of the sort:

This mistake has surely cost lives.

Now we are here and they cannot change direction fast enough:

Somebody has FINALLY poked the UK government to take some action... social distancing - whatever next? :shifty:

The reason appears to be that the virus is rampant - particularly in London (which is, of course, the only place that matters  )

Most of the reasoning is exactly what I have previously suggested (and in line with our neighbours) and the stated objective is to help the NHS keep its head above water.

There is also a little truth escaping about the likelihood of any form of immunity although the suggested mortality rate (<1%) is WAAAAAY less than suggested elsewhere and is even on the low side for other outbreaks.

At least there is information coming from the people who know..... even if it does seem a little "manicured".
Maybe the government doesn't want to cause panic.

Have you been to the shops recently?
Have you spoken to any over 70s?
Have you tried booking a flight to Spain?
Have you listened to the Airlines, Hospitality sector and othe businesses?
Have you looked at the stock market?
Have you seen the 10c in the £ decline in the value of Sterling in the last few weeks?

Fine job, Boris - confidence at a high and no panic!!!

Just because I'm paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get me

Sainsbury's first hour after opening tomorrow (March 19th) will be for elderly and vulnerable customers only. Also from March 23rd online customers over 70 years of age or with a disability will have priority access to online delivery slots. All instore cafes and meat, fish and pizza counters to be closed from March 19th so that staff and supply capacity can instead focus on essentials. New limits on bulk purchases (max 3 of any item or max 2 of highest demand items) apply with immediate effect.

I put my best foot forward and have over six months supply. That isn't to say that I'm going to take a break from stockpiling.
