I listened to the explanation for the delay in accepting anosmia as a symptom yesterday, but I couldn't help thinking it was just another example where the UK "experts" refuse to accept the expertise of their colleagues worldwide.

It makes absolutely no sense, considering that health minister Nadine Dorries reported that this was the impact of the virus on her back in March.

Just another oddity to add to the list of odd decisions taken (or not taken) when the rest of the world seemed to be going in another direction. 35000 dead.....

For anyone like me who had never heard of the word "anosmia "

I will more or less guarantee that before the big 6 week school summer holiday break ,the Government will lift restictions on grandchildren going to stay with their grandparents , even if the grandparents are currently shielding.

I'm waiting to see what the advice from the health experts is and how closely the government follow the aforementioned advice. I note that England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have given the public different interpretations based on the same science, the same scientific advice. I can see this leading to problems down the line.

Just to put things into perspective: just a little over 108 years ago RMS Titanic sunk with the loss of around 1500 passengers and crew.

I am a little dazzled with the true death figure in the UK but it is around 35000 people have died with the Coronavirus and that figure is still growing with 100's still dying daily. I don't know if that has really been taken in; and I doubt these times will be remembered on the same scale as the Titanic in another 108 years time...

The deep impact that coronavirus has had surely it will be remembered in 1,000 years time.

I think culture and human longevity actually play significant roles in how well past events are remembered. The example of the Titanic still punches above its weight, whilst there are disasters more recently or with higher death tolls that are less well remembered and plenty that many people wouldn't recognise at all anymore (even wars they never heard of).

Who still knows about the Wanggongchang explosion that killed 20,000 in 1626, the Taiping which sank with loss of 1,500 souls in 1949, or the Great Storm that took 8,000 lives in 1703? There are lists and details to be found online, of course...

Titanic has things going for it:

1) British and Americans died
2) Films about it
3) Auctions of "Titanic" memorabilia
4) An unsinkable ship sank on its maiden voyage
5) Many of the people on board were not merely rich but famous

Yes lots of cultural factors; being built in Belfast and sailing from Southampton also give it more UK significance.
