I cannot see what is wrong with the little green man and it is surely easier to train children to walk when they see the little green man not some symbol some may not understand and is certainly hard to tell to children.
There's nothing wrong with the green man. It symbolises 'pedestrians'.
There's nothing wrong with a green woman, or couple, symbolising 'pedestrians' too.
There are variations everywhere you go. Off the top of my head, in the eastern half of Berlin there is a different green man with a hat (different to to the western side of Berlin). In Havana the green man is animated and walks. In New York, they just use the word 'WALK'. At some crossings, there's just a round green light, with no markings.
Incredibly, people - even children - seem to understand what these lights indicate, and there aren't huge crowds stood at the roadside waiting for a gender-specific light.
