A tale of two egos

Post by blythburgh » Wed Jun 17 2020 9:37am

There were two programmes worth watching on the Beeb yesterday.

A repeat of "The Planets" with Professor Brian Cox. All programmes featuring him have to have the word Professor in front of his name.

And the first showing of "A House Through Time" with David Olusoga

David Olusoga the TV presenter who is also a Professor. But he only feels the need to use the P word when he is actually working in his role as a Professor.

Nor does one Professor feel the need for music to drown out the words for many people as he wants to emulate films. And if you cannot hear the what he is saying that is just too bad.

Wonder how well the hearing of Professor Cox will be when he is in his 60's. Cannot help but feel he will need subtitles if not an actual hearing aid

I'm not sure this is entirely fair blythburgh, bearing in mind that Professor Brian Cox has more than one career, formerly having been a "pop star" member of Dare and D:Ream in the 1980s/90s, so the "Professor" title lets you know which hat he's wearing and is probably a choice made by the broadcaster or his agent, anyway. This was more significant in the past when folks would have been likely to question why he was presenting science programmes. Also, there's an esteemed actor with the same name (not to mention a less well known film director) so using his title also makes it clear which Brian Cox is being referred to. The same ambiguity might not apply to David Olusoga!

Professor Cox can't hear the music - it's dubbed on afterwards.

But his ears have been subjected to a lot of loud music during his pop career which would have caused damage to his hearing. And if he, like so many others, spend time with headphones of some sort or the other to listen to music or even speech, then even more damage will be done to the ears.

By the time you realise you have damaged hearing it is too late.
