TBH I have not heard of some of these companies and i thought I was quite knowledgeable about the market.

The number of suppliers to have gone bust this year appears to be 15 (so far); following 20 others between 2016 and 2020. I've heard an estimate of 50 for the market size.

Omni Energy Limited, MA Energy Limited, Zebra Power Limited, and Ampoweruk Ltd have today announced they are ceasing to trade.

Omni Energy supplies around 6,000 domestic pre-payment customers, MA Energy supplies around 300 non-domestic customers, Zebra Power Limited supplies around 14,800 domestic customers, Ampoweruk Ltd supplies around 600 domestic customers, and around 2000 non-domestic customers.

it really is a disaster... the concept of all this competition provided by smaller companies providing good customer service was great, but it's being smashed to bits. i've helped teams with gathering customers in this industry, but much of that work is finishing up with a reconsolidation. how it looked before v how it will look afterwards will be interesting.. penny for your thoughts re that RF.

Poor regulation (the ridiculously low cash reserves required and no proof of energy supply contracts) made this a fair weather scheme and an "accident" waiting to happen...

For as long as the margin on buying in energy from the spot market and selling it at a profit was attractive, these companies were coining it, now they duck out and leave the consumer to pick up the tab. Any customer credit in these failed companies may be "safe", but that's because it will be honoured by the assigned company of last resort, who will then claim it back from a central fund financed by a levy across all customers...... so we'll all keep paying for this in our already-inflated energy bills.

A perfect example of "free market" liberalization imposed with minimal forethought, in order to claim kudos for consumer "protection", when actually it was just a license to print money for donors at cost to those same consumers. You couldn't make it up!

Another example of Boris Hood, robbing the poor to feed the rich!
