They're adding a Direct Debit facility from 4 March 2022; or at least the T&Cs change to support them from tomorrow.

Instant-access savings with 1.5% interest, that's very good!
Earn 1.5% interest on your savings

Start saving with as little as you like, right up to £250,000 across all your saver accounts – and you'll get interest on it all. We’ll calculate your 1.5% AER (1.49% gross) variable interest daily and pay it monthly.

Opened in two minutes this morning, and funds already in it.

Only Santander 123 cashback is now stopping me making this my main account.

Yeah, I clearly wasted my time renewing a fixed rate savings account earlier this month, but thankfully only opted for 1 year.

The only thing that puts me off this is the need for a Smartphone app..... I've happily used online banking for years, but just don't like app-based access.....

That might make life increasingly difficult; lots of banking and shopping authentication mechanisms want to send TXT messages these days.

You could do worse than try to pickup an O2 "Classic 123" SIM card for 20p on ebay, before they become completely extinct. Stick it in a basic old mobile phone and then remain connected to the service for the purpose of incoming TXT and calls, potentially paying no more than £10 (top-up) every 6 months. This tariff also qualifies for a FREE weekly coffee, breakfast roll/sausage roll/bake/pizza slice, cinema ticket and more from O2 Priority.

I'd agree that it's becoming difficult to live without a mobile these days...... and the cutover to digital-only voice makes that difficly. An alternative to the O2 sim, which is now discontinued, is 1P Mobile, which uses the EE network... however, that does require a £10 top-up every 3 months.

On the use of SMS as an authentication method, I'm surprised that nobody has picked up on the likely costs once roaming charges are re-introduced...... having to pay a day's roaming just to authenticate an activity whilst abroad is well OTT.

In my case, it is just a lack of interest/requiremnt/trust in mobile banking. It may seem luddite, but I can see absolutely no advantage and some risks in banking via a mobile app.....

It's always free to receive texts, wherever you are in the world.
