Sainsbury’s former chief executive Justin King dares to identify Brexit as the primary cause of food price inflation.
The businessman said the issues could be pinned on Britain leaving the EU, although he admitted the pandemic and Ukraine war have added to retail woes.

“The current pressures started with Brexit,” King told Sky News.

“You’re talking about the prime minister going to Northern Ireland today, the problems at the border in the Irish Sea, of course, are the reality…with many of our trading partners.

“Well in excess of 40% of our food comes from Europe, so it started with Brexit, Covid exacerbated the problems and of course the war in Ukraine and the particular impact it is having on certain commodities will be long lasting and significant.”

It comes as Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey warned of a “very big income shock” to households, and admitted feeling “helpless” in the face of surging inflation.

Brexit has been an unmitigated failure so far - and it is hard to see it providing any benefits long term. Of course, I would say that, as I'm one of those who said it was a stupid idea in the first place - and was told that I was being negative and that everything would work out OK. However, whilst the costs and drawbacks of Brexit are visible daily, be it the potential problems in NI, the queues for the import and export of goods, the limitations on previous "rights", the inability to coordinate energy policies, the inability to coordinate a response to Russia, the inability to source agricultural workers, the loss of financial and services business from the City and the total failure to control migration......... I have yet to see any concrete advantage from the "regained" sovereignty. Oh and before anyone cites "Covid" as an answer, just take off the blinkers and look to other countries in Europe to see how well the UK did......

But hey, blue(-ish) passports eh? If you live long enough to get one..........

I have a friend who poo-poos the idea of a trade-war with the EU, citing the good old "They need us more than we need them" lie..... this chart might suggest otherwise

Sunlit uplands latest. It’s all such a disaster there are now actual disaster charities involved.

Brexiteers seem to follow their hero Johnson when it comes to "uncomfortable truths". When asked to indicate any positive from this embarassing demonstration of national ineptitude, they quickly urge us to "move on" because "there are more important things" ..... you know, Covid, Afghanistan, Ukraine.... look at the birdie!

However, the most Johnsonesque part is that they don't seem to have learned from their mistake and have the arrogance to say they'd do it all again!

Here's a stark reminder of the lies that sold Brexit...
Today is the 6th anniversary of the Brexit referendum. This is what the Leave campaign promised it would be like once we left the EU. Judge for yourself if they were telling the truth.

Here's a fascinating short look at the missed opportunity to build back better post WW2. Perhaps there are some lessons to learn from this time that might have helped avoid the current Brexit and 'Global Britain' delusions.

"The Wasting of Britain's Marshall Aid"
Successive governments squandered billions of Marshall Plan Aid to support British world power pretensions, and so jeopardised the economic future of Britain.

This letter published in the FT yesterday points bluntly to similar hubris:
Brexit was a project of the imagination. An England so noble, so competent, so free, with such a history of greatness, that to sit down at a table as a mere equal with other nations in order to resolve common problems was an unbearable humiliation.
What is needed from British politicians is not just an economic rapprochement with the EU, but rather the opening of a well-grounded and honest debate on Britain’s history and position in the world, and on the benefits of co-operation.
