Late night reshuffle in progress

Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi is picked as chancellor after Rishi Sunak quits Boris Johnson's cabinet
Steve Barclay, Johnson's chief of staff, becomes health secretary, replacing Sajid Javid

Other minor resignations ten in total including the two major ones have taken place, but the apologists have been out in force.

He seems to have got through for the moment. I think the next step is the backbench 1922 committee which has elections next week. and there are dissenters who hope to be elected with the aim of changing the rules so a no confidence vote can be held earlier.

There's probably still a good chance of more fireworks before next week.

Michelle Donelan is the new education secretary, replacing Nadhim Zahawi.

Zahawi reportedly urged the treasury to pay teachers a 9% pay rise last week; is he going to grant it himself now, or was that just for show?

This would be my letter to Boris Johnson:

Apparently Harold MacMillan lost the whole of his treasury team and survived to continue to be PM for years. But you are not Supermac. You are merely lying, lazy self serving who has destroyed our country.

You lied to the electorate and won the Brexit referendum. The pound collapsed against the dollar when the result was announced and has gone further down. Oil and gas is bought in dollars and that is a major reason behind the huge increases in petrol/diesel and energy prices. Price rises that are crippling businesses and households in this country.

You signed a treaty with the EU on behalf of my country and now you want to rip up that International Treaty.

You have ruined my country and need to go now before your own party throw you out
Keep smiling because the light at the end of someone's tunnel may be you, Ron Cheneler

I agree, but he will not resign it would appear under any circumstances, So I see the 1922 committee as the next major event for him to be ousted.

Now eighteen resignations in total with possibly more forecast. No further big guns seem to be throwing in the towel though.

It is thought that Truss and Zahawi are playing the long game for any leadership challenge. By being seen as Boris loyal cheerleaders they are said to be hoping to get the popular vote at any challenge. A strategy that could seriously backfire and has no moral standpoint IMO.

Update with total @ 12:50

There's now been 9 ministerial resignations within 24 hours, which apparently beats a long standing record from 1903, making it the most since 1900; another 3 before 6pm would set a new all time record.

I heard on the news just now the total headcount is 19.

In breaking news, Nadine Dories is understood to be so firmly behind Boris that only her feet are visible now.

That'll be the count including parliamentary private secretaries, trade envoys, the vice-chairman, etc as well as ministers.

The fact that Nadhim Zadawi could bully his way into the role of Chancellor, when there are calls for him to be investigated for his role in a £3.5m purchase by his wife, says all you need to know about Jonson, his decision making and the calibre of those who support him.
