Patrick Barron "Paddy" Hopkirk has died, aged 88. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/motorsport/61930544
Perhaps the most famous Rally driver of his era, Paddy Hopkirk won the Monte Carlo Rally in a Mini Cooper and established the model as a rallying favourite. He won the Circuit of Ireland 5 times and the Hewison Trophy twice, he also won the Acropolis Rally winner, finshed 3 times at the LeMans 24-hour race amongst many other sporting achievements. His name became synonmous with the Mini, to the degree that BMW contracted him as an advisor for their "rebirth" of the marque.
On a personal note, I well remember my Da criticising my handling of our much loved Hillman Imp back in the day "Who d'ya think ye are- Paddy Hopkirk or something?!!"
