Labour MP's are snitching to the media

Post by blythburgh » Wed Sep 18 2024 10:12pm

Just heard that MP's have leaked the pay of Sue Gray, Chief of Staff, to Kier Starmer. She is earning more than he does. But she does have to buy her own clothes so needs more money

Labour MP's or disaffected Special Advisors?

Mostly a row about nothing. The Prime Minister has never been paid well if you compare the salary to that of top civil servants and leaders of business. A bit similar to the row about his wives clothes. Boris Johnson got a massive donation to refurbish the Downing Street flat. They all get it. Nothing changes. Politics at the top is very lucrative. Having said that, there is an expensive lifestyle to maintain.

I would support Prime Ministers, Ministers if female and their wives being loaned clothes when on occasions when they are doing public work. And I can see the need for a professional to help them choose their "on duty" outfits. But this should be made disclosed of course.

Sadly women whether they are the PM or the wife of the PM will come under scrutiny about their clothes. Men do not get the same sort of comment or attention.

I don't have a problem with the top dog earning less than a more junior position.
The only question is whether Sue Gray is being paid too much for the role she performs.
I think the only person who has any interest in this comparison with Starmer's salary is Starmer himself. If he feels hard done by, it might affect their working relationship.

I'm not sure whether Gray is on Starmer's payroll, or whether she's a civil servant and her pay is not is his jurisdiction. If the former, presumably he was aware of his senior staff payroll. If the latter, we're just comparing salaries from two different organisations.

This is a storm in a teacup.
