Advent story game

Post by richard@imutual » Fri Nov 30 2012 12:36pm

To complement our Christmas forum, we'll be running a daily "Advent calendar"-style competition - from 1-24 December funnily enough. It will take the form of a story game and each day, one participating member will earn 10 shares, though the main objective is just to have a bit of Christmas fun :)

Here's how it will work. Each day, we'll start a topic and provide the first line of a story ("Once upon a time"; we'll also give the word with which we want the story to finish. We then want you to post a reply with the suggested next word for that story so that as each member replies, we build the story word-by-word. At any time after 8pm that day, someone can complete the story by posting the 'end word' - but try to make it an appropriate point ;)

The following day, we'll then select one of the story replies at random and award 10 shares, and also kick off the next story. You can reply to the same story as many times as you like; just don't reply twice in a row i.e. after posting one word, let someone else post the next one. Try to cooperate with fellow members to create an original and amusing storyline :)

Please use this topic for any comments and questions about the competition

As you may have noticed, there is an automatic process that (every 10 minutes) updates the first post in each story topic, combining all the submitted words to show the story so far

I've just made a minor improvement to this, in case you want to add punctuation (full stop or comma) before your submitted word to improve the story grammar. e.g. let's say a story currently ends with "which she had missed". When you post a new word of "However", you want it to mark the beginning of a new sentence. Just add the full stop before your word e.g.
.However
Within 10 minutes, the first post will have been updated to show the story ending as follows:
...which she had missed. However
Note this will only work with commas and full stops. anything else will be treated as the start of your new word and any space characters you include will mark the end of your word

I don't see how anyone can mistake the Advent story for 'Funny games' ;)

Does anyone else think that the use of hyphens to get away with posting 2+ words at a time is against the spirit of the game? :?

Also seems that people are a bit too keen to post the "stopword" soon after 8pm without trying to create a nice finish :(
