How much work should MP's do outside of Parliament

Post by blythburgh » Fri May 19 2023 2:41pm

I can see that there is an argument for MP's doing non parliamentary work. But Jacob Rees Mogg really seems to be taking it to extremes.

Most MP's are in Westminster Monday to Thursday with some staying for the private members bills on a Friday but many going back to do constituency work and see family Friday to Sunday.

The Moggy sees no reason to be in Westminster during the evenings either. Just looked it up and his GB News radio show is on Mondays to Thursdays in the 8pm hour.

Just what are taxpayers (and we all pay tax via income tax, vat etc) paying the Member of Parliament for the 19th Century for? The radio show is 8 to 9 but he will have to be there before it starts and spend time preparing for an hourly near daily show. When does he have time to lie on the Commons bench? I say lie as he seems to prefer to lie across more than one seat rather than sit upright like other MP's

His life appears to me to be no different from many other MP's of all brands. Not sure why you are singling out this particular idiot.

Many MP's have a side hustle but how many have one that takes them away from the House of Commons every evening when a lot of the debates are happening?

The real parliamentary work takes place in committees and they operate more usual office hours. The debating chamber has more to do with show than substance.

On voting, many MPs are paired with an opposition member. Since their votes would offset each other, they can agree not to vote on less controversial divisions, thereby allowing time for other activities (being at home, going to the cinema, and yes, presenting radio shows).

As bad as NHS consultants working 2 or 3 days for the NHS and the rest doing private work .

Is it any different from Ben Bradley MP who is an MP and also the Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council. Two full time jobs. I say this situation is probably more scandalous.

That is disgraceful and should not be allowed. Almost as bad as Rev Ian Paisley who was being paid to be an MP, MEP and a Northern Ireland MP.

MP's should have to stand down from Councils etc when elected whatever party they represent
