So, we don't already have enough time zones, do we?
For decades, since 1884 in fact, the time offset against the meridian measured at Greenwich has been the standard measure ..... i.e. GMT.
However, in 1967 the UN decided that this was not now acceptable - so, with no other change whatsoever, the "Bureau International des Poids et Mesures" (BIPM) decided that we needed a rebrand..... and GMT became become UTC, "Coordinated Universal Time". Except, of course, that being a francophone organization, the Bureau declared the abbreviation to be that for the French equivalent........ UTC is now the "accepted" measure.
Culture wars anyone?
