As this "sort of" fits in the same category as topics that usually attract special awards, what I've decided is to give the top award to the post that got the most thanks in that thread, and then treat the 2nd and 3rd place posts as "special awards". Then the "normal" 2nd and 3rd place awards are given for posts in other topics.
