I am going to buy a few large first class stamps just in case I have a larger card to send. But only a very few as tend to buy "average" size cards

These days many greetings cards indicate on the back whether they'll need a letter or large letter stamp.
Looks like the increased large letter prices will start from £1.60 (1st class) and £1.15 (2nd class).

I've just found out my father-in-law ( aged 91 ) has been buying the new stamps and cutting off the QR code before posting the cards or letters .

That's good to hear. Royal Mail is sounding a little desperate today:
Talks to resolve a long-running row with Royal Mail staff over pay and conditions are close to collapse.
Discussions are "precarious" and in their "last throes", with the next 24-48 hours key to settling the dispute, a source close to the talks said.
The Royal Mail board is reported as threatening to put the firm into administration if a deal is not done.

Because old ones are still legal no problem. Thankfully you found it out before they become illegal
