Just in case you know someone who needs to know this

Post by blythburgh » Fri Jan 03 2025 10:54am

A copy and paste from a FB post by someone on my friends list:

Policing Fenland

A woman called 999 last Saturday at just before midnight…she said very little but a man’s voice could be heard in the background 🤔
She asked for police, but the line dropped out before she was put through to us.
We tried to call her back but these attempts failed and worried for her safety, we visited her home in Wisbech - where a woman with an injury to her eye opened the door 😞
We arrested one man on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm (ABH) and has been released on conditional bail while investigations continue.
Did you know that pressing 55 after calling 999 alerts police operators that you need help but are in a situation where you can't talk? 👀 📱
Pressing 55 lets the 999 operator know your call is genuine, and they will try to track your location.
If you can't speak, listen carefully to the questions and instructions from our demand hub call agents so they can assess your call and arrange help.

Not entirely correct.

55 only works on a mobile, and you will be prompted to dial it.
Dialing 55 is only used to advise the operator that you have intentionally dialled 999. Accidental calls are rare from landlines. It doesn't mean they will track your location or send assistance.

Oh, the dangers of social media and the spreading of misinformation. It will never happen, but people should really check out all the facts before repeating information. Southport should have been a good example of this.

FYI. I still feel I have no use for or need to use any form of social media.

I think this forum counts as social media.

You thinks so? I always think of it as a forum? But I am happy to disagree with you.

Even if you are right it hardly makes it into the realms of mainstream social media and I am happy to stand by what I said originally.

Official advice from various Police forces.

If you search your constabulary name followed by 999 55 should take you to your relevant page, so for example, I searched

'Devon and Cornwall Police 999 55'

Here are the links to the Met Police, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and Norfolk Constabulary, to mention but a few

The original post was from a police force official social media page. Think it might have been a Cambridgeshire force but not sure
